What to check with any Pakenham plumber.
The licence.
The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) licenses plumbers. Ask for the licence number and check it on the VBA public register. It is free and takes half a minute. Gas work is different again: only a licensed Class A gasfitter can work on gas pipework past the meter, and the work must be certified.
Insurance and a written quote.
Ask for a copy of the business's public liability insurance certificate before work starts, and get the price in writing. A quote you can trust separates labour from parts.
The Compliance Certificate.
If plumbing work is worth more than $750 all up (labour, materials and GST together), the licensed plumber who did it must issue a Compliance Certificate through the VBA, and you should have your copy within five business days. Gas work needs its own Certificate of Compliance. Keep both: your insurer and a future buyer's conveyancer will ask for them.
